Annual Golf Tournament Raises Money for the Matt Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund!

Thank you to all participants, sponsors, and volunteers for supporting the annual IYHA Jr Fuel Golf Tournament held August 27, at Stony Creek Golf Course in Noblesville. All proceeds benefit the IYHA Jr Fuel Matt Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund.

About the Matt Smith Memorial Scholarship 

IYHA and the family of Matt Smith have established a scholarship program in Matt's honor to make youth hockey more accessible to participants who demonstrate a financial need. Matt was a beloved hockey coach here at IYHA who lost his life much too soon back in August of 2015, but not before he had greatly touched the lives of the youth hockey and adult hockey communities here in the greater Indianapolis area. 

The Matt Smith Memorial Hockey Scholarship is funded by contributions and through future events as planned by our scholarship committee and the Smith family. IYHA encourages all families who feel they need assistance with regular season hockey fees to apply.

Coach Mike Barone grew up playing roller hockey in Michigan.  He played all the way up through college at Michigan State University. (Go Green!)  When he and his wife moved to Indiana, he wasn’t able to find any roller hockey leagues, so he joined an ice hockey team through his employment, Eli Lilly and Company. 

Coach Barone moved to Indiana from Michigan in 2004.  While living in Indiana, he married his beautiful wife Wendy, and has had wonderful young boys; all who are following in dad’s footsteps and falling in love with the sport of hockey.  Coach Barone has coached for the 317 League at The Fuel Tank since it started, and coached for the Junior Fuel house league prior to that.  He has been head coach for his oldest son’s 10U team, 12U team.   He has also been an assistant coach for his middle two son’s teams as they continue to grow through the 8U team and the 10U team.  Coach knows he will be busy this upcoming season with one son in 14U, one in 10U, and one in 8U this year and he plans to be as helpful as he can with all his boys’ teams.  His youngest son is officially taking skating lessons to perfect his skating skills so he can be ready for hockey soon; he may even start this year, only time will tell!

Coach Mike values the importance of getting to know his players.  His constant positive attitude and passion for the sport makes motivating the players seem so natural.  He gives each child the attention they need on the ice to consistently grow and improve.  His great communication skills with both parents and players make changes seem minor throughout the season. While hockey skills and skating skills are essential to be a quality hockey player, Coach Mike also emphasizes teamwork to his team and leadership to each of his players.

If your child ever has an opportunity to be on a team coached by Coach Mike, I assure you they will have a great role model, see a passion for the game, and will have some fun while improving their skills.
