The Indy Jr Fuel 12U Gold team was the first of four at that age group to win their selected tournament in South Bend over the holiday weekend. They were soon joined as champs by 12U Black who won in Pittsburgh, 12U Red who earned a banner at Miami University in Oxford, OH, and 12U White who completed the sweep at the Carmel Ice Skadium.
The Irish Cup in South Bend was where 12U Gold left their mark; going 3-1 in round robin play then back to back wins to claim the title!
The offense was rolling for Coach Dillon, averaging 4.5 goals game with 27 in 6 games. They beat the Pittsburgh Predators 5-3, the West Dundee Leafs 4-1, then the Kensington Valley Rebels 4-3 before dropping one to the Irish Rovers.
Their goal-scoring ability, provided in large part by Noah Dugan, propelled them in a 7-2 semi final victory over the Columbus Jr Bluejackets and a 4-3 win against the Chicago Hawks in the championship game.
Between games at the Three Rivers Cup in Pittsburgh, the 12U Black team had a tour of PPG Arena and even saw the Penguins locker room. What a great experience for a group of young hockey players.
In round robin play, Will Duggan's hat-trick was the difference in their 5-2 opening victory over the South Simcoe Storm. The team didn't have what it took to best the Allegheny Badgers the first time, but quickly rebounded with a 4-1 defeat of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. They took on the Badgers again in the final, and this time were rewarded for their efforts with a 2-1 win when it mattered most!
Goalie Noah Albrecht was named tournament MVP for his performance in the blue paint.
12U Red then won their third tournament of the year in Goggin Arena on the Miami campus in beautiful Oxford, OH. James Williams stopped every shot against the Cincinnati Jr Cyclones as his group scored 5 to start the tournament. 12U Red then had a hard-fought 2-1 win against the Glass City Gladiators, and tied the Chesterfield Falcons 5-5 to end round robin play. They took on Glass City again in the final, this game took a shootout to determine a victor: Josie Gustin, Everette Knowles, and Quinn Brutout all scored to give the Jr Fuel a 4-3 win and yet another banner for the rafters.
The full sweep was finalized on Monday with Max Nicholson’s overtime winner for 12U White at the Carmel Ice Skadium. Round robin games were a roller coaster for this team. They started with a huge win against the Cincinnati Jr Cyclones, dropped one to the Meramec Sharks, and goalie Ben Price's shutout helped a dominant victory over the Affton Americans. They had a rematch with Meramec in the final, but came out on top after extra time!
Coach June's offense was humming all tournament with Jensen Welu, Jack June, and Dominic Barone all recording hat-tricks on the weekend. Welu earned MVP honors with 8 goals in their four games.
Congratulations to our Indy Jr Fuel 12U players and coaches! Let’s hope our teams can continue this momentum into league playoffs and the Governor’s Cup.
