Rolland "Whitey" Guenin
1933 - 2016
We all know that cancer does not discriminate, and everyone has been touched by this horrible disease in some way, including our Guenin Cup namesake, Rolland “Whitey” Guenin. Sadly, Whitey was taken from this earth too soon on June 27, 2016 after a valiant struggle with cancer.
Born in South Bend, he was a veteran the Korean War. He worked for many years as a manager of the Coliseum at the State Fair Grounds. As a driven professional with a passion for ice hockey. Whitey played for the Indianapolis Warriors and opened our very own Carmel Ice Skadium in 1974, where he served as owner, manager and coach until 2002 when he retired. Whitey was active in youth hockey and instilled in many youths a love for the sport. He will be remembered as an inspiration to all that knew him.
In 2017, IYHA chose to honor Rolland "Whitey" Guenin's legacy with the Guenin Cup and our IYHA & St. Baldrick’s FACEOFF Against Childhood Cancer. We know that research is the only way to find breakthroughs.
Run concurrently with our end-of-season Guenin Cup tournament, our St. Baldrick’s event has become a favorite charitable tradition amongst our IYHA families.
This 2018-2019 season, our on-site head-shaving experience will be Saturday, March 9th, at Carmel Ice Skadium in the Rink 2 Lobby from 2:30 – 5:00p.
Anyone can sign up online to help raise funds for St. Baldrick’s, and get their heads shaved in a display of solidarity with the very kids we’re trying to help.
