We are very excited to announce that our U10 Racers travel teams will be guided by the following coaches. All coaches will collaborate and lead the team practices. Bench coaches for games will be assigned to each team immediately upon the conclusion of tryouts on May 14. All players selected for AAA, AA and A will know who their head coach will be for games prior to making a season commitment and paying their deposit.

Pat Murray brings an extremely successful hockey-playing and coaching resume to our U10 teams. After a stellar three seasons at Michigan State University (where he scored 183 points in 135 games), Pat turned pro after his junior year with the Philadelphia Flyers (NHL). Pat went on to play eight seasons of professional hockey before retiring to pursue a career in business. During his playing career, Pat played under the tutelage of many outstanding coaches, such as Ron Mason, Ken Hitchcock, George Gwozdecky, Dave King, Newell Brown and Mike Eaves to name but a few. As a coach, Pat has 17 years of experience, including coaching alongside the current head coach of Tampa Bay’s NHL franchise Jon Cooper during his time in East Lansing.

AJ McIntosh has been a fixture in the Indy hockey community for the past 26 years. AJ grew up playing hockey in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He went on to play Junior A hockey in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

Following his playing career, AJ moved to Indy to race sprint cars with his father Lyn. Soon after arriving in the US, he graduated with a teaching degree from Indiana University. He has taught physical education at Park Tudor School since 1991.

AJ coached the prep hockey team at Park Tudor for 11 years that won seven state championships and two Midwest Prep League Championships. He went on to coach the Racers youth travel teams along with U14 coach Todd Grant. Coach McIntosh and Grant led the Racers “96’s to a Central States League Championship in 2010 and a tier 2 National Championship in 2011.

In addition to coaching youth hockey, AJ currently coaches the U12 soccer team at Park Tudor and a U10 lacrosse team for Carmel Dads’ Club.

Ryan Smith, like U14 head coach Todd Grant, is another Indianapolis youth hockey success story. Ryan grew up in Indy playing travel hockey locally until enrolling at Park Tudor School where he set multiple single season scoring records for Indiana high school hockey.

After his years at Park Tudor, Ryan joined Coach Josh Mervis and the Danville Wings of the NAHL. While playing for the Wings, he earned a scholarship to play D1 college hockey for Ohio State University.

Following his retirement and return to Indy, Ryan coached the Jr. Ice U16 team from 2004-2006 and IYHA mites from 2011-2015. For the past 2 seasons, Ryan has been an assistant coach for the Indy Strong ‘06 team. In addition to coaching hockey, he has also coached youth travel soccer and baseball for the past 5 years.

Liam Tully is returning for his third season coaching Indy travel hockey. A native of Newmarket, Ontario, Tully played three seasons of professional hockey before retiring to join our coaching ranks. In 2015-2016 Liam assisted Bernie John with the 2006’s, and acted as head coach of the ‘06 White team for games. Last season Liam was the head coach of our ‘07 Squirt Minor teams.

“Liam is a great teacher of the game and does a fantastic job developing the skills of our young players," said Hockey Director Derek Edwardson. "He is the perfect fit for this age group. These players are in an important window of development and all of our Racers U10  coaches know it is imperative that fundamental hockey skills are acquired.”
