Run concurrently with our end-of-season Guenin Cup tournament, our St. Baldrick’s event has become our favorite charitable tradition amongst our IYHA families. This season, our on-site head-shaving experience will be Saturday, March 4th, at Carmel Ice Skadium in the rink 2 lobby. Anyone can sign up online to help raise funds for St. Baldrick’s, and then get their heads shaved in a display of solidarity with the very kids we’re trying to help.

How on earth did such an amazing philanthropic event get started at IYHA?
At the end of the 2012-2013 season, IYHA Coach Gary Timpe encouraged his IYHA mite team, the Blackhawks, to shave their heads for a local St. Baldrick’s event at Main Street Barber Shop. The little team that could raised nearly $5,000 for St. Baldrick’s in just one week! When the team showed up shorn for their games that weekend at the Guenin Cup, word spread quickly and the fire was started. The IYHA Board and many hockey moms and dads wanted to see what it would look like to begin an organization-wide fundraiser, and our IYHA & St. Baldrick’s FACEOFF Against Childhood Cancer event was born!
The very next season, in March 2014, we clipped more than 40 shavees and raised more than $22,000. Two years ago, in 2015, our coffers overflowed with nearly $58,000! Last season, we earned $34,000 for St. Baldrick’s! In total, IYHA friends and families have donated more than $114,000 to help provide funding for research to defeat childhood cancers!

In addition to our own annual event, we are excited to announce that the Indy Fuel has decided to get involved this season. Friday, March 3 is “Brave the Shave” night with the Indy Fuel at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum! The Fuel team will be wearing specialty St. Baldrick’s jerseys which will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds benefiting St. Baldrick’s, and we will be shaving heads at the Coliseum as well!
IYHA has decided to alter the Guenin Cup schedule to clear that Friday night so that our families can help pack the house with the entire Indianapolis youth hockey community and help raise as much money as possible to help find a cure for pediatric cancer with St. Baldrick’s.
The top two fundraisers with the IYHA event will also receive a special surprise that evening- stay tuned to find out!
